An earthquake has opened a crack in the ground - which so far is
nothing unusual, but thing is, people (among them Shawn C. Phillips, Mike
Ferguson and director Dustin Ferguson himself) tend to disappear in the
vicinity of this crack. Local Sheriff Brackett (D.T. Carney) wants to
investigate, but he's put on a leash by Mayor Reid (Mel Novak), who fears
for the tourism of the region. So it's up to local couple Aaron (Eric
Prochnau) and Cheryl (Sheri Davis) and their friend Jennifer (Jennifer
Nangle) to figure out what's going on, and fortunately Aaron's sister
Charlene (Brinke Stevens) is a scientist, and when taking a look at some
blood samples collected in the vicinity of the crack, she realizes there
must be something involved in the disappearances, something that's not
human, or really any known species, something like - a beast beneath ... A
charming throwback to sci-fi monster movies from the 1950s that really has
it all, a fun monster that is left in the shadows mostly but is shown
enough to leave an impression, cannonfodder characters drawn to the lair
of the monster like moths to the fire, ineffective politics and cops never
showing up on time, and the heroic couple making the difference. Now sure,
none of this is the re-invention of the wheel, but it's an hour of very
solid genre entertainment.
