Trying to save the survivors of a plane that came down in a plutonium
bomb testing area, Colonel Glenn Manning (Glenn Langan) gets right into
the blast of the bomb - but interestingly, the blast doesn't kill him but
make him stronger, much stronger. All his injuries heal within a day, he
is back to health and fitness, and he starts to grow - at a rate of 10 or
so feet a day. This soon worries everybody, including the scientists
(William Hudson, Larry Thor) examining him and his fiancée Carol (Cathy
Downs), especially because his heart doesn't grow at the same rate and
will eventually explode. Plus, the bigger Manning gets, the more cynical
he becomes as well, and his cynisism soon becomes madness and he goes on a
rampage through Las Vegas - before eventually being shot off Boulder Dam. Despite
its reputation of being pure drive-in trash, The Amazing Colossal Man
is probably the best giant creature film Bert I.Gordon has ever made: It
is the one of his films that features character motivation, character
development, a thought-through story with psychological subtext, and the
special effects are pretty good (for their time) as well. Of course, this
is all done in a pulp context and this is no message movie but pure
drive-in cinema - but still it's a pretty decent effort.
