It seems nothing has gone right for actor/writer Graham (Josh Radnor)
in quite some time, he repeatedly gets turned down at auditions, his
scripts don't sell, as he doesn't make any money his TV star brother Will
(Rob Huebel) has employed him as caretaker of their childhood home where
he's to find a tenant - and he's no good even at this. Then though
suddenly his life is turned around, one of his scripts sells, and a
college friend, Dana (Chandra Russell), wants to sublet the house - Dana,
whom he promptly falls in love with, and she seems to be interested as
well. So for a few minutes Graham feels like in heaven - until his brother
stops by for a surprise visit after abuse allegations against him have
arisen on the set of his hit TV show, Graham's parents (Becky Ann Baker,
John Ashton) show up to help fix the house, but really they're having a
bit of a crisis that has also to do with the fact that mum was groped by
her boss (David Pasquesi) at her retirement party. Also, Will's son (Ivy
O'Brien) has suddenly decided he wants to be a woman, and nobody knows how
to deal with this. And to top it all of, Graham finds his basement flooded
- ironically exactly what his plumber (Antoine McKay) has warned him about
...
In a way, a typical Murphy's law comedy where everything that
can go wrong will go wrong - but that would mean reducing the film on its
premise while All Happy Families is actually much more of a
character piece with a certain slice-of-life feel to it as the movie does
its best not to exaggerate and instead let the story flow, giving its cast
of well fleshed out characters room to breathe. And a script driven by
somewhat subdued humour, a suitably subtle direction and a solid cast all
help making this a comedy that's well worth a watch.
