If you're at all into horror, it's more likely than not that you've
heard about writer Joe R. Lansdale, at the very least via the pretty much
universally loved movie Bubba Ho-Tep
which was based on one of his short stories. And if you've read some of
Lansdale's work, you more likely than not at least appreciate his rather
unconventional writing style. And this documentary tries to basically
uncover what makes Lansdale tick the way he does, via interviews not only
with him and his family but also fellow writers, genre afficionados, and
people from Lansdale movie adaptations like Don Coscarelli and Bruce
Campbell from Bubba Ho-Tep and
James Purefoy from the short-lived Hap and Leonard TV series
- and some findings here are quite interesting, like the impact the local
drive-in had on his work, how his stories relate to the special kind of
martial arts he has developed and teaches, and how he got inspiration from
his wife's self-made popcorn. Now if you're at all interested
in Joe R. Lansdale and his work, then this movie's definitely for you, as
it doesn't only dig deep into the writer's mind, but does so in an
unassuming and entertaining way, telling its story with a light-footed and
anecdotal approach rather than giving just the bare facts, and has some
cool interviewees to back the stories up. Well worth a watch for sure.
