When his colleague Lois Lane (Noel Neill) and private eye Garrity
(Elisha Cook jr) are kidnapped right from the detective's office, Jimmy
Olsen (Jack Larson) puts on the P.I.'s trenchcoat and hat and starts
investigating - and even though private eye is a role not suitable for
him, and he has his problems with handcuffs, he is able to track his
friends down to blackmailer Cappy (Richard Benedict) ... where he only
gets trapped with Lois and Garrity, who decides to gas them. Fortunately
though, Jimmy and Lois are friends with Superman (George Reeves), and he
somehow manages to follow Jimmy's tracks and arrive at the gas chamber
just before Jimmy, Lois and Garrity have breathed their last. And of
course, Superman not only sees to it that his friends are saved but also
that the baddies get their just desserts.
Essentially a Jimmy Olsen adventure that plays up the comical
aspects of its story - but one has to give the episode more credits for
trying than for achieving: While Jack Larson sure has some comic talents
(which he proves in almost every episode), he hams up his pseudo tough guy
act a bit too much to really remain funny in the long run. Still, one of
the better episodes of the second season of Adventures of Superman.
