Even though the local inspector (Fred Sherman) closed down his
one-man-mine, Pop (Housely Stevenson) just won't stop working in it -
until he gets caught up in a cave-in. Rescue teams are soon on the scene
and are planning to dig a new tunnle to save him, but they won't reach him
in time - so reporter Lois Lane (Phyllis Coates), always on the lookout
for a new story, climbs into the mine on her own to save Pop, but
unfortunately, she only manages to make matters worse, as she causes
another cave-in despite her best intentions, and now seals herself and Pop
up completely - and as if that wasn't enough, suddenly their little cave
fills with gas, and the miners will never get to them in time ...
And what's Superman/Clark Kent (George Reeves) doing about all this ?
For the longest time nothing, because in several scenes , he just
misses the news, and when he comes to the mine to pick Lois up, he hasn't
got a care in the world - but of course, in the finale, he gets to Lois
and Pop just in time, removing the rubble with his own hands, and gets
them out of the mine just before it totally caves in.
Basically, this episode is an exercise in suspense more than anything
else. The story might be feeble and the outcome predictable (there is just
no way they let Lois die in this episode), but the main focus of the whole
story is on when will Clark learn about Lois's fate - which he doesn't
until the very end. And soemhow, this narrative device alone makes the
whole thing work.
