Robin of Locksley (Richard Greene) returns to his native England after
having been cruzading with King Richard for quite some years. But back
home he learns his father has died and he was proclaimed dead as well, and
Sir Roger De Lisle (Leo McKern) has taken over his castle with ihs brutal
bunch of foresters, who are likely to cut off poachers' hands and
stuff.
But when Robin tries to reclaim his property, Sir Roger only mocks him,
then throws him out. So Robin has to go to the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan
Wheatley) to claim his right. The Sheriff seems to be all for his cause,
but actually he's a friend of De Lisle's and suggests that Robin is met
with a little accident. Robin though is on guard even at the
handover of his property, and he evades the arrow supposed to kill him,
which is instead caught by De Lisle.
Robin flees from De Lisle's guards and the men of the Sheriff of
Nottingham to Sherwood Forest, where he announces his presence to the
outlaws of Will Scatlock (Bruce Seton).
Why ?
Of course to join them - after all Robin is now an outlaw charged with
the murder of Roger De Lisle.
Of course The Adventures of Robin Hood is simplistic,
cheaply made and stagey, but after all, this is early television
for a largely juvenile audience, and as such, it works just fine.
