One evening, pretty much out of nowhere, elderly Ann (Dale Dickey) and
her bed-bound husband Chip (Greg Ellwand) are picked up from their
apartment and deported into a retirement home - and it's apparently legal,
too, as there's a court paper saying Ann is unfit to look after Chip. Of
course, neither did know that there were proceedings going on, but that
doesn't mean it's not legal. And frankly, even their family think Ann has
just messed up - all but their granddaughter Emma (Romane Denis), who has
always seen Ann as a resolute woman. She tries to go the legal way, but
sees that the head of the retirement home Rivera (Bruce Ramsay) has
covered all bases, and has long made it a business to quite legally get
his hands on the fortune of the elderly by having them thrown into his
institutions. Thing is, he doesn't find the money he expected with Ann and
Chip, so he and his men try brute force to get it out of them - something
which only results in Chip's death. The truth though is, Ann actually sits
on a vast and well-hidden fortune that she's not ready to give up at any
cost - and she has botht he means and the skills to fight back against
Rivera's well-oiled system ...
The G is a thriller that has all of its suspense, its
shocks, its ourbursts of violence in all the right places, and the premise
is engaging enough to keep one, erm, engaged - but what really makes The
G is that it's not just the same story done over again but shifts
focus, subverts not only gender but also age clichés to ultimately make
the person least likely to its heroine - albeit an utterly violent one.
And the fact that the whole thing's populated by a relatable cast playing
well fleshed out roles only make this a genre piece not to be missed.
