A meteor is threatening to hit the earth, Metropolis to be precise, so
Superman (George Reeves) flies up to ram it out of its trajectory and into
an orbit around the blue planet. But returning to earth, Superman has lost
all of his memory, and it's more or less a coincidence that - as Clark
Kent - he makes it back to his appartment, totally oblivious to his
superhuman abilities. However, the gravitation of the orbiting meteor
causes all kinds of natural desasters, and now earth would be in desperate
need of Superman to destroy the thing, but Superman has perished ... well,
he's still here, but has no idea about his powers - until Clark finds a
set of Superman costumes in a secret compartment in his closet, finds out
he has superpowers, puts two and two together, turns into Superman and
flies up to the meteor with some explosive to blow it up - and the
explosion seems to trigger his memory, since he's suddenly back to normal
again.
The premise of this episode is of course childish as can be, but
somehow it finds just the right balance of drama, comedy and suspense to
work nevertheless, with a bit of camp value thrown in just for good
measure. By no means a perfect episode of course, but entertaining.
