Jack (Eason Chan) and Ching (Jo Kuk) have just married and moved into a
new appartment - when Jack becomes the victim of a hit-and-run accident
and falls into a coma. When he wakes up from his coma again and is on the
verge of recovery, he suddenly starts seeing things that are connected to
death and spirits. But the more he tries to talk to Ching about it the
more evasive she gets, and eventually the two become so detached that Jack
starts suspecting she is leading a double life or something.
Then September (Cherrie Ying), his goddaughter, shows up at his
doorstep, and the two decide to spy on Ching ... and soon find a few
disquieting things, like her exboyfriend who committed suicide just so she
can claim the insurance money, her mother who is not dead as she stated
but in a mental institution, as well as the truth about Jack and Ching's new
appartment, that has actually belonged to her for years. And then there's
the next-door voyeur who has a large library of videotapes taken from
their apartment.
Finally, Jack is able to corner Ching and confront her with the facts,
only to learn that he has only woken up from his coma because Ching prayed
at an altar and promised to sacrifice her life if his is spared - still,
it seems a certain spirit is after him. Thing is, the spirit might be
September, who apparently never made it to Hong Kong after a plane crash,
and who actually has long been in love with her godfather.
Finally, the spirit wants to drive Ching to suicide by jumping from the
rooftop, but seeing that, Jack promises to give his life instead and
selflessly jumps off the roof ... only to survive. Turns out that
September wasn't the spirit after them after all but was in a coma for
quite some time and now she has given her life to save Jack's.
At times, this is a very atmospheric and pretty interesting ghoststory
... but only at times. As a whole, the movie is extremely overconvoluted
to the point of being incomprehensible, crowded by supporting characters
who enter and leave the film rather at random, and the setup of the main
storyline simply takes way too long. Still, the film is not a total
failure, it's beautifully photographed, well-acted and it definitely has
its moments. At the same time though it's not half as entertaining or as
interesting as the first Visible
Secret.
