Peter (Eason Chan) has a new girlfriend, June (Qi Shu), and she really
loves him as well and things couldn't be happier ... just one tiny little
problem: June tends to see ghosts, and every now and again, she and Peter bump into possessed people, as if June would attract this kind of
crowd. Worse still, somehow Peter and his father (James Wong) - who is
eventually found hanged in his hospital bed - seem to be pursued by a
particularly nasty spirit, and it has something to do with an old family
story about a man who lost his head in a car accident ... and
interestingly, June seems to have been at the scene of the accident when
she was a child, but she now has no more recollections of it.
Anyways, before long, the spirit catches up with Peter and occasionally
possesses him, which makes him a threat to all those around him - and unfortunately he at first blames June for everything, and when he learns
that June is actually there to help him it's almost too late.
June eventually takes Peter to her exorcist friend (Anthony Wong
Chau-San), but unfortunately the man not only admits to being a fraud, he
is also ultimately possessed by the spirit and now goes after Peter ...
and now he wants to decapitate him for good ... because you know, Peter's
dad pushed the man in front of the car all those years ago. The possessed
exorcist already moves in for the kill when June finally remembers: It all
really was just an accident, Peter's dad only pushed the man because he
got (accidently) pushed himself and couldn't help it.
Seeing he wasn't intentionally killed after all, the spirit finds his
peace, vows to leave Peter alone, and leaves this world for good.
Days later, Peter and June visit a graveyard when Peter stumbles upon
June's grave. It turns out she has been a spirit herself all along, only
here to help him ...
The plot of this film might sound a tad clichéd, however the film is
not, it's a masterful blend of murder mystery and ghost story relying not
so much on action and effects (though there's quite some of that too) but
on atmosphere, and it takes quite some time to set up its actual plot without
ever getting boring - in fact, there are even some amusing scenes in the
film that don't spoil the film's overall atmosphere in the least.
In all, totally recommended.
