Your new movie Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze - in a few words, what is it about?

Mushrooms, blood and madness.

How did the project fall together in the first place, and who came up with the original idea?

Jim Aal persuaded me to do a short film for a compilation DVD, and then we came up with this. I then conscribed it as a script and improved on it again together with Master W [Master W interview - click here].

What can you tell us about Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze's brand of humour?

It's pretty borderline humour. I don't blame anyone who can't laugh about it.

Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze doesn't exactly shy away from torture and dismemberment - so do talk about the gore effects in your movie for a bit, and how were they achieved?

We had a deadline and I had a week. So as simple as possible. But for this type of humour, effects need to be simple and look fun rather than real.

You've written and directed Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze together with Master W - so what was your collaboration like?

We're already well-rehearsed. We can also laugh well together and share our strange sense of humour.

Do talk about Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze's cast, and why exactly these people?

Like I said, we didn't have much time. So the usual accomplices and Ska had long since told me they would like to take part again. But even so, I think everyone fits their role well and does their job very well. As for me, I've always wanted to play a cop

A few words about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

Mixed. The mood for the interior shots was very good. We had a lot to laugh about outside, but we were pressed for time because it got dark early and it was really cold that day. One should not inject with so much liquid in February.

The $64-question of course, where can Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze be seen?

The Blu-ray can already be pre-ordered. Otherwise there will be the cinema premiere here in Gevelsberg on August 7th 2023.

Any future projects you'd like to share?

I have already started my next project of my own, Lilli Got Sick Part 2. What we're going to do next with P.S.Y.C.H.O. Productions isn't quite clear yet.

What got you into the filmworld in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

No, nothing like that. I just discovered my love for splatter films very early on. And I also started to make and test my own effects early on.

Since you seem equally at home in both, do you see yourself more as a director who also does special effects or an effects wizard who also directs? And your approach to both jobs?

Rather as an effect artist. Directing and all that was just necessary to implement the effects. But I enjoy both.

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze, in whatever position?

I've been making films for about 20 years and mainly effects for P.S.Y.C.H.O. Productions for about 10 years

Going through your filmography, one can't but notice you never stray too far from the horror genre - so is that a genre at all dear to you, and why (not)?

Yes, I love this genre. But I'd like to try others too. But stories are absolutely not my strength and other genres are generally more difficult to implement.

Filmmakers, special effects masters, whoever else who inspire you?

Filmmakers like Heiko Fipper, Andreas Schnaas and Olaf Ittenbach inspired me to start this as a hobby. Today I do it for the joy of getting better and because I still love the genre.

Your favourite movies?

There are so many. I like films from almost all areas. To name a few: Das komabrutale Duell, Cannibal Holocaust, Premutos, Fight Club.

... and of course, films you really deplore?

Me before you, Human Centipede 2, ...

Your/your movie's website, social media, whatever else?

I'm on Facebook and Instagram, I don't have a homepage.

Anything else you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask?

Yes, when is my new film Violent Obsession coming out? The answer is, at the same time as Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze, both the cinema premiere and on DVD.

Thanks for the interview!
