Your upcoming film Pernicious - in a few words, what is it about?

Three girls go to Thailand and awaken an aching evil. What should have been a dream vacation is now a nightmare. Evil never dies… it waits.

Your inspirations when writing Pernicious? And since the film was shot in Thailand, does your script pay any tribute to Thai folklore?

The script that I wrote is very unique to Thailand and unique to Thai folklore. The only place it can be made is Thailand! This film is so tied into the Thai culture that I think it will really pull people into it. It's something I’ve never seen done before and I think is one of the most frightening real life practices I have ever read about.

How did the project come into being in the first place?

Daemon Hillin and I had been developing the project with Rachvin and Kulthep Narula for over a year before the project truly got some legs. Then Taryn Hillin and I began working out the script together. I loved the collaboration she and I had. It was the perfect yes and conversations.

Please do talk about the film's look and feel for a bit!

Although dark and gritty, the film is very cinematic and beautiful. I worked extensively with my beyond talented DP, Seo, to develop a look for the film that I feel opens up the film just enough to still keep the claustrophobic feeling. Trust me, it’s my most cinematic film yet.

How would you describe your movie's specific approach to horror, maybe also in comparison to your earlier movies?

I would like to think I have a unique way of telling a story. I always have some pretty extreme violence but the stories are all rooted in the people. Truly understanding and caring about the people that are going through the inciting incident. At its core level all my films are about people trying to hold themselves together while falling apart. The more we humanize a victim and the more we humanize evil, the more it feels like it can really happen. I feel like Pernicious is a unique journey that I think everyone will have some fun with.

Do talk about your cast for a bit, and why exactly these people?

Emily O’Brien, Jackie Moore, Ciara Hanna

My cast was awesome! I can’t say enough wonderful things about my 3 ladies! Emily O’Brien, Jackie Moore [Jackie Moore interview - click here] and Ciara Hanna [Ciara Hanna interview - click here] were the perfect actors for the parts and I have remained close with all 3 of them since filming in Thailand. I feel like the friendship and bond we all created while making this film together will be something that will last forever. As Bogart would say, "We will always have Thailand."

Could you talk about the shoot and on-set atmosphere, and how did shooting in Thailand compare to shooting in the USA? And related to that, could you ever be persuaded to shoot in Thailand again?

I had an amazing time and the whole film was an eye-opening experience. I loved Thailand. And I miss it. Beautiful and amazing place and people. I will gladly return anytime!

The $64-question of course, when and where will your film be released onto the general public?

NO CLUE! But VMI is taking it to market right now and I should have an answer in the next 2 months.

Any future projects you'd like to share?

I have a few films brewing but nothing I can mention right now. The last one I already shot stars Zack Ward, Christopher Lloyd and Shannen Doherty. I can’t say what it is yet but I promise you will all see it!
