Years ago, Guillaume (Guillaume Campanacci) has moved to Hollywood to
follow his dream and become an actor and filmmaker - but after a failed
relationship, he has returned to his family home in the South of France to
basically slitting his wrists and kill himself. He's saved by his family
though who try their best to make him want to live again - with moderate
success, as he has lost faith that he'll ever be able to love again, and
he drowns his sorrows in alcohol ... which is better than another suicide
attempt at least. Then at a party, he meets lovely Vedrana (Vesper Egon),
who seems to be there on her own, and her looks and air of mystery
immediately attract him. The two of them quickly warm up to one another,
and Guillaume's emotional defense mechanisms brought on by his last
relationship gradually crumble - when his ex (Barea Amandine) appears out
of the blue, claiming she's pregnant with his child and wants to get back
together with him again ... Above synopsis hardly does Whenever
I'm Alone with You any justice as it makes it sound very much like a
straightforward romance - which the film clearly isn't, it's told in a
very labyrinthine, non-linear way that often favours associations over
narrative logic and leaves large junks of the narration open to
interpretation. Likewise the film shows an experimental directorial
approach very much reminiscent of nouvelle vague cinema and
especially Jean-Luc Godard's style - without ever blatantly copying Godard
that is. This makes the movie at once seem like it has fallen out of time
and remarkably fresh, in a way that it doesn't resemble today's mainstream
cinema at all but instead invites its audience to a rather unique
cinematic exerience - and a very worthwhile at that.
