Today, Alex Liu is 36 and he's openly gay - and yet still has hang-ups
talking about sexuality, especially to his parents (Bill and Lisa Liu). To
explain this a little more he grew up in the 1990s when there was no
nuanced sex education to speak of, the answer to almost everything was
abstinence until marriage, homosexuality was stigmatized and even
masturbation regarded a sin. Now starting with another awkward
conversation with his parents about sex, Alex sets out on a roundtrip
through the USA and Canada to find out the naked truths and hard facts,
awkwardness included, about sexuality, shining many different lights on
the subject, and contacting such diverse persons and organisations like
the Kinsey Institute, Rutgers University (which does orgasm research), the
church (where he finds some very unexpected answers), Pornhub, anti-porn
senator Todd Weiler, radio sex therapist Laurie Betito, Planned
Parenthood, and the like, also to see if another talk about sex with his
parents at the end of the trip would be any less awkward ... Now
whether or not you agree with everything stated in this movie, this is
probably one of the most relatable documentaries there is, basically
because of Alex Liu's everyman personality that doesn't even try to always
hide his awkwardness when asking some of the questions (or getting some of
the answers). And that's what also makes the film so entertaining, despite
being brim-ful of facts, statistics and opinions, there's always a light
tone to it, something that makes sexuality much more than just a subject
for clinical studies or even something that needs to be fought over, and
that makes the film quite entertaining. And it makes one feel better about
one's own sexuality ...
