Streaming on Screambox: Shunsuke (Yuto Nakajima) is to get
married the next morning, and to the daughter of the CEO of the company he
works at, too, so it will be quite a step up the ladder. But before he's
getting hitched, his colleagues pretty much force a stag party on him -
nothing too special, but everybody gets drunk ... and then Shunsuke finds
himself at the bottom of a manhole with his leg injured, and the ladder up
misses a few steps, so in his current condition he can't use it. He phones
his bride-to-be and friend after friend for assistance, but since it's
late at night, nobody picks up, nobody but Mai (Nao Honda), an ex of his,
who at first seems to be less than happy to talk to him but ultimately
proves a real help, advising him how to treat his injury and trying her
best to find the manhole he's fallen into. Thing is, that manhole proves
to be nowhere near he was drinking with his colleagues at, so her efforts
to get him out soon hit a wall. Having run out of options otherwise,
Shunsuke creates a social media account to get help - but posing as a
pretty girl to attract plenty of people. And really, his account soon goes
viral and people get excited about saving him/her - and it's really high
time, too, as the manhole is filling up with water and foam, so obviously
the time's ticking ... #Manhole is quite the unsettling
film, as the premise - falling into a manhole while intoxicated - isn't
particularly far-fetched, and the mystery that's rooted in it is cleverly
conceived while the social media angle is pure satire, but worked into the
plot quite ingeniously, and even providing the story's final twist - and
twists there are many, especially considering the film mostly shows just
one man in a manhole and little else. But a genre savvy direction and a
very competent cast manage to keep things compelling and tense throughout,
helping to make this a very worthwhile watch.
