Hawkeye (John Hart) & his Indian friend Chingachgook (Lon Chaney
jr), the Last of the Mohicans find a great number of Indian tribes
settling in the Hudson Valley who don't belong there ... which might spell
troubles for the white settlers. And they free a white woman, Martha Wales
(Marjorie Purvey), from some Indians who has been their slave for the last
18 years, & she begs them to help her free her son, who was captured
by the Indians with her but the 2 were parted early on. When a short time
later Hawkeye and Chingachgook learn about some settlers being attacked by
Indians led by a white man & they relate it to the legend of White
Eagle, a white-skinned Indian prophet, they know they are onto something. After
a long search they reach an Indian village where they indeed find a white
man dubbed the White Eagle Larry Solway), but when they want to persuade
him that he is really Jed, their attempts are cut off by medicine man Sun
Bear (Ed McNamara), who seems to have White Eagle under his thumb &
has long sort of brainwashed him that he really is an Indian prophet. So
Hawkeye and Chingachgook decide to fetch White Eagle's mother to break the
medicine man's spell ... which is not quite as easy since Sun Bear has
sent out warriors after them to stop them ... & the warriors do really
catch Hawkeye, he is brought back to the Indian village & about to be
executed - when Chingachgook arrives with Martha Wales, White Eagle's
mother. White Eagle is not convinced right away, but seeing the woman is
enough to plant doubts, so he stops Sun Bear trying to kill either her or
Hawkeye. Hawkeye challenges Sun Bear to a duel to the death, which is
granted to him according to Indian right - but during the duel, which
seems to go in Hawkeye's favour, Sun Bear takes Martha Wales hostage -
very wrong, because suddenly White Eagle sees through his facade &
sees the woman really is his mother ... & Sun Bear's grip over the boy
& the tribe is broken all at once. White Eagle/Jed is reunited with
his mother, & the Indians promise to try the treacherous Sun Bear
& to keep peace with the settlers ... Rather unexciting
tv-Western by Sam Newfield, actually a specialist in making /B-)Westerns -
he made over 150 (!). Lon Chaney jr's Chingachgook is rather limited to
the status of an old man sidekick & both the role & his looks
rather sadly reflect him being an actor at the tail end of his career
& his long years of heavy drinking.
