The English-language version of F.P.1
antwortet nicht, so the plot as such is pretty much the same - so
please go there for a detailed synopsis -, only the actors are different:
Conrad Veidt plays Ellison, the daredevil pilot who gets the floating platform
(F.P.1) to be made, but loses his love over it, Leslie Fenton plays Droste, the
architect who builds & commandeers the F.P.1, Jill Esmond plays Claire
Lennartz, the girl between them, George Merritt plays the officer who sabotages
the F.P.1 & Donald Calthrop plays Ellison's photoreporter sidekick.
... but even though at times F.P.1 doesn't answer is a take-for-take
remake of its German counterpart, the 2 versions differ greatly: while F.P.1
antwortet nicht was, especially in the first half, a showcase tailored
for its popular star Hans Albers, Conrad Veidt of F.P.1 doesn't answer fails to
bring much charisma to the role & carry the movie on his shoulders,
substituting Albers' daredevil jack-of-all-trades persona for a more
sportsmanlike aviator - which pretty much derives his character of much-needed
believability.
On the other hand though, the English version, running about half an hour
shorter than its German counterpart, has considerably trimmed down the romantic
first half, which serves as a set-up for the whole story, but was (in the
German version) needlessly padded out, making the English version a more
action- & plot-oriented film.
