Somewhere in fantasy land, the Middle Ages: Of late, the realm of King
Samuel (Kevin Hager) has become the hunting grounds of a monster known as
the Bone Devil (Ben Stobber), and not wanting to waste any of his men,
least of all his hot-headed tom-boyish daughter Sabine (Sarah Nicklin), a
master swordswoman, in a fight with the creature, the king hires Brennus
(Robert Standley) and his monsterhunters for hire, the Lost Blades. And
the Lost Blades sure finish the job to everyone's satisfaction, even if
they lose a couple of their rank. However, sometimes a peace isn't as
easily won as a war, as there's treachery aplenty on Samuel's court, most
of it stemming from Monsignor Mustela (Greg Tally), who wants to usurp the
throne and to this end encourages Princess Sabine to challenge Brennus's
daughter (Kim Kelly) to a duel that leads to the princess's death and the
Lost Blades' incarceration. Also, Mustela keeps a mninotaur (Bishop
Stevens) in the dungeon for the creature's poisonous blood - but of
course, the creature eventually escapes to wreak havoc. And then, too, the
mother of the slain Bone Devil shows up for revenge ... Angie Everhart
plays a duchess on the King's court, Eric Robert makes a short but amusing
appearance as Lord Sussex. So ok, if you're looking for
historical accuracy here or for profound myths, you're at a loss here, as
this is more of a hodgepodge of fantasy and fairy tale mainstays set in a
past that never was, with an eye firmly on action and adventure - and it's
really well at what it does, as the film moves at a brisk pace that almost
never lets up, every Dollar of the film's comparatively low budget is also
on screen, the action's competently staged, and there's plenty of
spectacle. And the non-CGI monsters actually look pretty impressive and
add a very palpable quality to the film not too often seen in the fantasy
genre anymore these days. So maybe not a masterpiece in the traditional
sense of the word, but good genre entertainment for sure.
