Once again, Bulldog Drummond (John Howard) tries to marry his
sweetheart Phyllis (Heather Angel), this time in the manor of his
ancestors, but quite naturally, the trouble follows him everywhere, this
time in the form of professor Downie (Forrester Harvey), an absent minded
but ki9nd hearted man who just happens to own an ancient diary that
reveals a treasure dungeon somewhere beneath Drummond's ancestral mansion
... but unfortunately it is written in a code the professor still has to
decipher, & even more unfortunately, the professor fears that his
ex-assistant gone rogue Seaton is after the diary - what's most
unfortunately though is that Seaton, under a false name, has been hired as
a butler in the Drummond household ... & of course Seaton (Leo
G.Carroll) kills the professor in the very night before Drummond's wedding
... Drummond's friend Col.Nielson (H.B.Warner) of Scotland Yard of
course soon has the premises sealed off by his men, so Seaton, to fake a
getaway, kills one of the policeman guarding the mansion & fakes a
getaway, while he calmly climbs back into the mansion on some ivy ... it
is only the next day that Drummond, Nielson, Drummond's sidekick Algie
(Reginald Denny) & his head butler Tenny (E.E.Clive) discover a few
rather curious things while investigating: There are no actual traces of
the killer getting away, the ivy seems to be very convenient to reach one
of the windows & seems to have been used recently (for climbing),
& then there's the dead body of a man who was supposed to be
Drummond's butler instead of Seaton ... Seaton though has meanwhile
found the secret entrance to the treasure dungeon, & has taken Phyllis
with him to look for the treasure as a hostage. Drummond & co are of
course not far behind, so Seaton uses every trick & trap available in
the dungeon to stop them (like lowering spikes onto them & such). In
the end though it is Phyllis who caqn stop him by throwing his treasure
into the raging canal below them, & foolishly enough he jumps after it
... As with most Bulldog Drummond films, the
mystery as such is neither especially good nor original, but the film is
saved by some lively acting, eccentric characters & the refusal to
take itself tooo seriously, & the film ultimately delivers an hour of
light entertainment.
