Having successfully fought a war in Africa, Elio (Al Cliver) returns to Italy with high aspirations write a book about war, but with virtually no money to afford the decadent lifestyle he & his wife Alessandra (Lilli Carati) have grown used to, to pay for maintenance of their mansion, or their servants, the gardener Pedro (Nello Pazzafini) or the secretary Virna (Annie Belle), who has started a love affair with Alessandra while Elio was away ... & Elio comes home with Zerbal (Laura Gemser), a savage girl some African tribal chief has given to him as a personal slave.

Soon though it becomes clear that Zerbal, in her present position as Elio's personal servant, pvoves too much a strain on domestic peace, so he gives her as a gift to his wife - in a ritual that involves massive breastlicking.

Soon it turns out that Zerbal is neither as naive nor as helpless as her decadent massters thought her to be, & she engulfs herself in a passionate love affair with Alessandra, her mistress, to the dismay of especilly Virna, who feels more & more left out by Alessandra - but feels herself more & more drawn to Furio (Roberto Caruso), Elio's son fro0m a previous marriage, who comes for a visit.

But then Elio, trying to figure a way to bridge his financial problems, has the great idea to produce a porn-movie with the 3 ladies of his house, to which they agree when he promises them absolute anonymity behind masks. During the shoot, Alessandra, having grown tired of Virna, decides to tie her to a bed but forget to put on Virna's mask. & as if that wasn't enough, she then has her -still a vigin - raped by the gardener, and all on camera. In shock, but with the film, Virna flees the estate.

Zerbal meanwhile proves a downright bitch as she not only persuads Alessandra to trade places with her (so Alessandra becomes her slave) but also tries to persuade her to have Virna killed, give her Elio as a slave too and give her all the jewellery that is supposed to be Furio's inheritance from his mother ...

The breastlicking ritual that makes Elio Zerbal's slave is in full swing when Virna brings Furio, who demands an explanation ... & during that somehow Zerbal catches fire & is burned alive.

Up to a certain point in the movie's narrative, L'Alcova seems to be an interesting piece of work, with the primitive enslaved girl turning the tables on her decadent masters/tormentors, but eventually, the character of Virna is - rather inexplicably - turned into the victim of the story, while Zerbal turns into the lead villain (even more inexplicably), with whose destruction in the end everything turns well again ... one doesn't have to be overly politically correct (which I'm not) to see a certain flaw in this line of argument.

Apart from this apparent inconsistencies, L'Alcova is an entertaining piece of softcore sleaze, with unintentionally funny scenes & hilarious dialogue, unprovoked nudity & breastlicking rituals, and of course Laura Gemser, who's pretty good in this one. In all, one of Joe D'Amato's more enjoyable sex-romps.
