A mountain village in 19th century Macedonia: Maria the Wolf-Eateress
(Anamaria Marinca), a badly scarred woman with magical powers, demands
Nevena (Sara Klimoska) as her maid at her birth. But her mother brokers
her deal so she can keep Nevana until she's 16, and she raises the girl in
a cave, not allowing her outside, until at age 16, and now almost
completely feral due to life-long neglect, she's given to Maria. However,
she's not much use to Maria in her state, and thus is soon abandoned. On
her own, Nevena explores the world she knows nothing about - but she has a
gift, she can shapeshift, and assuming different identities, mostly
female, but sometimes males as well, and even a dog, she learns the ways
of the humans, and slowly integrates herself into society, which even
includes marrying and having a child. But Maria the Wolf-Eateress is never
far behind, and once the child is born she claims it as her own ...
This film is based on a very nice folk horror premise, and it
sure features some great imagery and strong performances - but frankly, it
drones on for much too long. Basically the concept of Nevana shapeshifting
to learn more about humankind becomes repetitive after a while and things
often seem forced when she learns a new aspect of life. So while the film
is pretty intense for the first half hour or so, it then loses steam, with
the tension before long going out of the window, leaving nothing but a
feeling of same old same old. Now for the first act alone, the movie's
still immensely watchable, it's just a pity it doesn't hold up as a whole.
