In a tv interview, Jim Hacker (Paul Eddington), minister for
admnistrative affairs defends a decision to install a national database,
containing personal data of all British citizens without necessary
safeguards so vividly, that his political advisor Weisel (Neil Fitzwiliam)
& even his wife (Diana Hoddinott) call him a puppet of his departments
permanent secretary Humphrey (Nigel Hawthorne), much more so since it is
against his own convictions.
Desperately trying to outsmart Humphrey, Hacker turns to his
predecessor Tom Sargent (Robert Urguhart), only to learn that Sargent
& Humphrey were fighting over the same thingt, & he has already
forced Humphrey to make a dossier ... & forthermore, he hands Hacker
over the dossier. With the dossier as an ace up his sleeve, Hacker forces
Humphrey to make him a dossier, & furthermore announces on another
tv-show that the safeguards for the database are now in their final stages
- which forces Humphrey to act ... & he presents HAcker with exactly
the same dossier he has made for Sargent years ago.
... & to just let Humphrey know that he knows that he too has
gotten hold of the dossier & knows how new it is is the first
small victory for Hacker over Humphrey ...
While my synopsis might sound factual & boring, the actual show is
great, & well played, political satire.
