Undercover cop Hayato (Sonny Chiba) has the perfect cover for his
operations against organized crime and especially two Yakuza gangs, the
Yashiro- and the Okuda-gang: He poses as a cop fallen from grace, and even
the newspapers have printed reports about his unhonourable discharge.
As a cop gone rogue, it is easy for him to join up with the Yashiro
gang, and soon he gets his first job: to kill big boss Okuda ... and even
though Hayato (in secret) is still a cop, he shows little hesitation in
killing the gangster, and even though he has to take on the whole Okuda
gang to get to their boss and blow him up, Hayato succeeds, too ... only
to then have a man sent after him to kill him by his own boss Nishi.
However, somehow Hayato can overcome the assassin and turn the tables
on Nishi by confronting him with his would-be killer and forcing him to
kill him himself in front of his whole gang. Hayato it seems soon rises in
the ranks, and big boss Yashiro hooks him up with one of his other
under-bosses, Akutsa ... but behind his back, Yashiro, Nishi and Akutsa
all want Hayato dead and just keep him alive as long as they can use him.
Soon enough, Hayato falls for Akutsa's moll, but she has only been sent
by Akutsa to spy on Hayato ... initially, later she of course falls in
love with him, and in the showdown gives her life to save his ...
The showdown comprises a drugdeal gone wrong, a shoot-out between the
Yashiros and the Okudas, a fight everybody against Hayato, who has since
been found out as an undercover cop, and furious chases on foot, by car
and by helicopter ... and of course in the end Hayato has blown all his
opponents away ...
While my synopsis might suggest a hard-boiled crime story, Yakuza
Deka is acutally done in a light, almost comedic mood - which is
rather at odds with the vast amount of on-screen violence. However, Yakuza
Deka is not a film to watch for the story, it's more a fast-paced
sequence of action scenes with a bit of plot thrown in to make the whole
thing comprehensible. The action itself though is first class and includes
ferocious fights, breathtaking stunts, high octane chases and explosive
shoot-outs aplenty to keep one entertained, and the light narrative mood
acutally helps not taking the story seriously.
