Carlo (Robert Belushi) leads a simple but agreeable life, running a dog
grooming business with his best friend (and maybe more) Gina (Jill-Michele
Melean) and having little actual worries - when his father Don Serrelli
(Carlos Alazraqui) pulls him back into the family. You see, the Serrellis
are one of two mob families in town, and even though nobody much takes
them seriously anymore, they still wage a war against one another about
supremacy, and to come to a truce, Carlo is to marry Don Miola's (Maurice
LaMarche) daughter Patricia (Erinn Hayes), a woman he hardly knows let
alone fancies, plus he knows she has an affair with his brother Dominic
(Bret Ernst). Carlo flat out refuses, but upon that Patricia throws a fit
(and calls her father), Miola puts out a hit on Dominic - and suddenly
it's up to Carlo to diffuse the situation and apologize to Miola
personally, besides asking for his daughter's hand in marriage. Carlo
agrees to do so because he's too nice a guy to be the cause of an all-out
war, but he brings two friends when paying a visit to Miola, Gina and
neighbourhood sandwich joint owner Vince (Vince Donvito) - and that
meeting doesn't go at all as planned, as before you know it, Miola's men
have tied up all three of them and readied them for execution ... when
flesh-eating zombies overrun the Miola estate, killing everyone but our
heroic trio, who somehow make it out alive. But surviving this ordeal
makes them realize one thing, they're in the midst of a zombie apocalypse,
and they're not in the least prepared for this ...
Above all else, Witness Infection is just great fun, a
witty blend of mafia movie and zombie flick that gets its laughs from
playing up the absurdities of both these genres, and from fusing them in
rather hilarious ways. And the fact that the leads are playing it straight
and that despite the theme the humour never drops to gross-out level
really helps to make this as hilarious as it is, while its very
well-structured story that's more than just a hanger for jokes keeps one
engaged throughout, as does a cast that contains just the right mix of
relatable perfomances and point-on caricatures. So if you're in for a good
genre laugh, this one's right up your alley.
