Members of the Science Patrol investigate a series of freak bus crashes
- by taking the bus and promptly getting into a crash. Somehow, these
crashes are linked to the Cosmic Ray Center that's in the immediate
vicinity, and when investigating there, Captain Muramatsu (Akijii
Kobayashi) of the Patrol stumbles upon a bunch of aliens who use the the
bus crashes to collect human specimens they want to study to later take
over earth based on that knowledge. Soon enough, the Captain gets into
trouble, but calls in for help just in time, and as fate has it, pilot
Hayata (Susumu Kurobe) receives the call, turns into his alter ego, giant
robot Ultraman (Bin Furuya), and rushes to the rescue - which proves a bit
difficult at first because while he's a giant, the aliens are man-sized,
but soon enough, one of them grows to giant size for a bit of wrestling,
then Ultraman is shrunk down to human size, so now he's able to take on
the smaller aliens. And finally, back to giant size, Ultraman not only
chases the last remaining alien away from earth, he also destroys it in
the process and saves the day - again.
This episode features some of the goofiest looking monsters - fittingly
called Dada - of the whole series, which is anything but short on goofy
looking monsters. Here though it seems, nobody has even tried to make them
look scary, and instead they are weirdly reminiscent of Swiss playdough
mime comedy troupe Mummenschanz (which of course wasn't around until five
years after this episode was made, but that's besides the point). This of
course seems to be totally inappropriate in a science fiction show of the
giant monster/robot variety, but it also gives it a weirdly (and probably
unintentional) surreal touch. And of course, seeing our giant robot hero
fight weirdo monsters is great fun!
