Of late, smoke is obscuring a long extinct volcano, and some tourists
say they saw something, possibly a giant monster, in the smoke, so the
local tourism board calls the Science Patrol in for investigations - but
the Patrol thinks so litle of the whole thing, they send their only female
member Akiko Fuji (Hiroko Sakurai) and their kid mascot Hoshino to deal
with the case. Of course, the two soon find a real giant monster and even
almost fall prey to it, when the rest of the Patrol and the army intervene
to get them free - but the giant monster at hand seems to be pretty much
invincible to conventional weapons, and it even causes the Science
Patrol's top fighter jet to crash. That jet's pilot Hayata (Susumu Kurobe)
however is secretly giant robot Ultraman (Bin Furuya), and once he has
turned into the giant metal man, he fights, defeats and destroys the
monster - with the help of the Patrol though, who have eventually
discovered the monster's weak spot and fire a missile at it at just the
right moment. One of the more inspired monsters of the series
and massive urban deconstruction make this one of the better episodes of Ultraman.
Sure it's still childish and campy, but that's part of the series' appeal,
isn't it?
