Six friends, Jennifer (Jessica Cameron), her boyfriend Ray (Shelby
Stehlin), his sister Courtney (Devanny Pinn), Courtney's boyfriend John
(Jesse Wilson), Michelle (Heather Dorff) and her boyfriend Tony (Brandon
Van Vliet), have banded together to produce a YouTube show called Truth
or Dare that shows them doing rather daring stunts - but it's really
more for the audience's thrill, they always have some sort of safety net
are performers rather than actual daredevils - and are immensely popular
with their audience of course. For their latest show, they decided to play
a game of Russian roulette in a remote house where they can't be disturbed
- which sounds like a stupid idea only if you don't know that the bullet
they're using is actually a blank. But then John blows his brain away for
real ... Enter Derik (Ryan Kiser), who has been the gang's biggest fan -
until he found out their tricks were all rigged. But now he has replaced
the blank John just used on himself with a real one to bring authenticity
back to their show, ties them all up, and forces them all to play an
actual game of Truth or Dare with him - which he himself picking all the
truths and dares, and punishing those breaking the rules. Of course, our
heroes at first all think it's the easiest to choose truth - but Derik
knows all their little secrets including incest, pedophilia and rape, and
he's quick to cut those who try to hush up things. Over all their
confession, our little gang soon falls apart and finds it a safer bet to
choose a dare - but here things get really ugly, as Derik forces them to
cut themselves or each other up, play William Tell-like gamesb and the
like. And our heroes start to fall like flies ... Now this is
definitely a film that gorehounds will like as it doesn't hold back in the
blood'n'guts department one bit, featuring sliced off nipples, pulled out
eyes, cut up testicles and the like aplenty without ever holding back with
yet one more depravity - but at the same time, Truth or Dare is
much more than a simplistic bloodbath, it's a rather poignant commentary
on today's internet fame and "reality" shows alike where
depravity often rules over everything else in a "get famous
quick"-sort of way, and with each new atrocity in the movie the
commentary gets more biting. At the same time though, Truth or Dare
works as a tight horror thriller that really builds up tension along with
letting the blood flow, and shows a predilection for the grotesque and
macabre often absent from today's more slick genre fare. And of course, a
strong ensemble cast doesn't hurt one bit either. Not for the squeamish,
but definitely worth a look for horror fans and not only those ...
