Our host Peter Butt (Simon Lui) takes us through four stories about
ghosts that are only very loosely directed: First is the story about
prankster Ken (Louis Koo), whom his friends Ball (Allen Ting) and Bee
(Jason Chiu) take to a cemetary for his birthday to trick him into
believing the place is haunted by ghosts - only the trick backfires when
Ken dies from fright and returns a ghost himself. The second story is
about Mrs To (Christy Chung), who is to meet her husband (Sunny Chan) at a
fancy restaurant for an anniversary dinner - but when she arrives, the
place is closed, and when she phones her husband, he claims he is in front
of the restaurant waiting for her. Thing is, she is in front of the
restaurant and cannot see him. She later learns his car has been hit by a
ravine on the way there when he was fighting with his girlfriend (Kenix
Kwok) he has shagged on the side for months, and he died in the accident.
So her husband must have phoned her from the beyond ... Back to Ball and
Bee, and Bee's virginal girlfriend Jojo (Teresa Mak), who is possessed by
a ghost who shags her every night. Thank God the guys run into Mr Big
Mole, host Peter Butt's twin brother (who is thus also played by Simon
Lui) who exorcises the ghost in a quite eccentric way. Finally, Ball and
Bee's boss Hung (Ng Chi Hung) visits a movie theatre with his girlfriend
May (Christine Ng) - only the place is haunted, and the resident ghosts
won't let the newcomers leave ... Very mediocre horror
anthology that loses itself somewhere between being genuine horror and
playing it for laughs - especially host Simon Lui would suggest the latter
- and doesn't really convince on either account. That said of course there
are way worse horror comedies out there, and Troublesome Night is
not nearly as annoying as most of them - but that's not a good enough
reason to want to watch the movie, now is it?
