Luke (Edward Hayter) and Tommy (Freddie Thorp) have been best friends
since childhood, but now that they're in their late teens and things start
to get serious, their behaviour - alcohol, drugs and petty crime - becomes
more and more self-destructive, but coming from dysfunctional families,
they only have each other to fall back on, and they have big dreams (with
little foundation in reality) that bond them together. Especially Tommy is
very possessive of Luke, so when Luke is getting serious with Nikki (Diana
Vickers), Tommy does everything to sabotage that relationship - and
ultimately succeeds. Then one night, Tommy witnesses Luke's dad (Adam
Deacon), an outstressed and depressed alcoholic, beat the living shit out
of Luke - and now Tommy wants Luke avenged, and he's ready to get dirty
for it ...
Taking the story alone, this could have drifted off into
social kitsch very easily, but thanks to a relatable script with strong
characters and proper character development, this has become quite a
touching movie, thanks of course also to a self-assured directorial effort
that doesn't shy away from associative imagery when necessary, and a
strong and believable cast. Well worth a watch, even if social drama isn't
normally your sort of thing.
