Tetsuo Lumiere of Argentina spoofs hismelf, low budget cinema and more
than likely the late Ed Wood in this uncanny comedy about an inept film
director who wishes to make a perfect space invasion film, due to his
fixation with War of the Worlds. Needless to say, he doesn't do it. Oh,
he tries, mind you, making stupid shorts in an effort to build up his
reputation and finances, with special note going to this horribly bad
werewolf picture, where the werewolf has a paper mache snout for a nose. Flying
saucers in his production look remarkably like those from Plan Nine From
Outer Space, and due to sort of a King Midas touch in reverse, everything he
touches turns to shit rather than gold.
In the end, the would-be king of sci-fi dies in a fire, which of course
leads to his posthumous glorification and this documentary.
Filmed in Argentina and released in Spanish, there is a version with
English subtitles though the tarnslations sometimes make mistakes. You
can still get what is going on and unintentionally, this adds a little
something to the film.
Hopefully Tetsuo will release some more stuff soon. I have heard he does
indeed have a new project coming. It is a pity he is not better known
outside South America and South American film in general has not
received the attention it deserves.
