Thailand 1886: Peter Blaine, a defector of the British army, is trying
to make a living in the illegal arms trade - however, one of his customers
discovers that his guns are defective, and, because Blaine can#t pay back
the money for the guns, he sends Blaine on a tiger hunt, to shoot a tiger
with his own defective guns ...
Around that time, near King River, several people are killed byx an
especially big and especially ferocious tigress, and somehow Blaine - who
by now has turned alcoholic - finds himself with a little hunting
expedition that is led by a woman, Julia, daughter of a missionary and an
excellent hunter, and is also joined by monk Wan, who warns everybody that
they are fighting something bigger than just a tigress, something
supernatural.
And really, the surroundings of King River are littered with ghosts
from a battle a century ago, who are doomed to recreate their battle every
night, while the tigress is the ghost of Nian, a woman who was gangraped
and killed in the battle, and who is since out for vengeance, using both
her human and her tiger-form to kill her victims, and who is protected by
the spirit of her loyal elephant ...
Soon enough, our little hunting expedition is attacked by the tigress
and the elephant, and they are decimated by the numbers ... but they also
discover a boneyard littered with ivory and ancient armor, which leaves
quite an impression with the greedier members of the party, before they
reach a nearby mission, a safe haven.
Monk Wan though sets out into the jungle alone and finds ghost Nian in
her human form, wounded, and since he doesn't know who she is or even that
she's no longer human, he treats her wound, and wants to bring her to the
mission on her ghost elephant ... only to be attacked by some renegade
members of the hunting party who have decided to go after the tiger and
the treasures of the boneyard on their own ... however, they are no match
for Nian in her tiger-form ...
Ultimately, it turns out that Wan is the reincarnation of Nian's lover
while Julia is the reincarnation of the ringleader of the men who
gangraped her ... but in the finale, Julia is gangraped by the group of
renegade hunters, and only thanks to Blaine and Wan are they driven away.
Then though, Nian wants to kill Julia, to have her revenge, but Wan can
keep her from doing so, persuading her to give up her ideas of vengeance
and embrace death to be reborn ... and ultimately she lets him shoot her
...
Part fantasy, part old-ashioned (in a good way) jungle adventure, part
animal horror, with a bit of romance and a bit of violence thrown in, this
film is all-around fun. Of course, Tigress of King River might not
be the most original film there is, it wades knee-deep in mythological
clichés and borrows heavily from similarly themed movies - most
prominently Predator -, but still, the film is fast-paced,
competently crafted, and above all, it never fails to entertain ... and
that's what adventure films are all about !!!
