The Swiss Alps: Three herdsmen - (self-)righteous Senn (Peter
Simonischek), hormonal Hirt (Giovanni Früh) and youngster Bub (Andy Voss)
- are to spend the summer up an alpine pasture to take care of the cows
entrusted to them. And of course, loneliness and sexual frustration get to
them more and more with each day passing - so much so that one drunken
night, they create a Tuntschi - basically an archaic sex doll - out
of branches, roots and blankets, and have their way with her. All just fun
and games ... until the Tuntschi comes to life (and is played by Pamela
Prati), and she doesn't like being taken advantage of. The men are shocked
at first, but then capture her, rape her, then let a bull have his way
with her - which is when she turns back into a Tuntschi ... but appears to
the three men time and again the following days, and ultimately captures,
kills and skins Hirt, then nails his skin to the herdsmen's cabin. The
other two do the only reasonable thing and round up their cows to leave
the mountains as quickly as possible. But it's not very likely the
Tuntschi will just let them go ... Not a success upon its
initial release yet a minor hit on VHS with the sexploitation crowd, Sukkubus
is actually an interesting film whichever way you look at it: Basically
the film, based on a Swiss legend, is a mixture of folk horror, softcore
sex flick and existential drama, starring three well-established serious
actors in the male leads opposite Penthouse Pet Prati (who consequently
appears mostly in the nude in this one), and it's also the last film by
Georg Tressler after a career that lasted over 40 years and saw him direct
many milestones of German postwar cinema (and some pointless sex comedies
in the 1970s). So all of this promises something interesting at least, and
the film sure keeps this promise. Sure, it's no masterpiece, but much of
the film has a certain archaic quality to it, from the relative lack of
meaningless dialogue to the no-frills directorial effort to the simple
beauty of the alpine backdrop. Interestingly, the film falls a tad flat
when it needs spectacle, thus not all the horrors come across as
shockingly as expected, and the finale is a bit underwhelming, but in all
the film's a very intersting watch for sure.
