A nameless man (Bug Hall) has been raised locked in a basement with no
direct contact to the outside world, and even the man who raises him,
"The Provider", only speaks to him through a hole in the wall.
Then this captive is suddenly thrown out into the real world, and at first
he's more than a little confused and knows very little about how to act
among real people - but homeless Remy (Nicholas Turturro) takes him under
his wing and teaches him a thing or two. Problem is, Remy isn't exactly a
good guy, he's a thief with a tendency for murder, and he has no problems
to betray even his friends - including our hero, whom he eventually tries
to frame for a murder he has committed. The police almost gets their hands
on him, too, if it wasn't for Maya (Amber Mason), who somehow has taken a
liking to the weird man and snatches him off the street. Weird thing, too,
is she's the first one who believes our hero's story how he grows up and
promises to help him find "The Provider" - and of course, the
two fall in love and plan to just run away with one another ... and then
Maya's gone ... The captive eventually runs into Andrew (Howard
Kingston), who claims to have shared his fate but now knows where
"The Provider", a certain Mockenrue (William Katt) lives and
wants our hero to have his revenge on him. But will this solve anything or
just be part of a downward spiral? Sure, the premise of Subterranea
might sound a tad reminiscent of Oldboy
or Bad Boy Bubby - but the science fiction and paranoia tale the
film spins out of the premise is highly original, as is the not strictly
linear and at times quite associative way it's told - and yet the film
works perfectly in the suspense section and is good at surprising its
audience up to pretty much the last minute. And add to this a pretty fine
ensemble cast, and you've got yourself a pretty cool genre piece.
