Playwright, director and producer Jimmy Hart (Victor Jory) has lost his
leading lady Patricia Wallace (Evelyn Venable) to another man, Freddie
Arnold (Ralph Forbes) ... and they are leaving on the new highspeed train
the Streamline Express - a train with all the comfort of an oceanliner -
from New York to the West Coast the very same day of Hart's latest play's
dress rehearsal. Now of course, Hart tries everything to win Patricia
back, even if that means dressing up as a stewart for the duration of the
journey, just to wait for a chance to have a word alone with her. Things
get out of hand though when he gets involved in what appears to be a
diamond theft (which is actually a blackmailing attempt) and becomes the
main suspect ... but in the end, his name is not only cleared, he and
Patricia even realize they are in love with each other and always have
been - and Freddie is even willing to let Patricia go ... back to New
York, to star in Jimmy's show after all ... Despite featuring
science fiction and crime drama elements, this is essentially a romantic
comedy, from a time before romantic comedies were essentially chick flicks
and were actually going for a broader appeal. On top of that, the diverse
elements of Streamline Express really click this time around,
making for a very light-footed piece of entertainment that might not be an
actual masterpiece, but it's well-written, well-played, competently
directed, the typically (too) low budget a company like Mascot had
at hand for its cinemtaic output is hardly apparent here, and the titular Streamline
Express as such is actually a pretty nice piece of work in a
retro-sci-fi sort of way.
