Evan's (Lou Taylor Pucci) mother has just died, then he loses his job,
shows up on a bully's hitlist, the police are after him for a minor
altercation ... so Evan just decides to skip his old life and travel off
to Italy, and after a few days of crossing the country with two
hard-drinking Brits, he ends up in a small coastal town as a farmhand to
an old and friendly farmer (Freancesco Carnelutti) ... and somehow he runs
across Louise (Nadia Hilker), the most beautiful girl he has ever seen,
and he falls head over heels in love with her - but at first, she's only
ok with having sex with him, and only gradually lets him into her life
more and more - but she has something to hide, too, namely that she at
times turns into a creature who has to feed on blood (animal blood mostly,
but sometimes out of necessity she has to feed on humans too), and the
shots she's taking against this condition seem to work less and less. And
then all of a sudden, Louise dumps Evan without giving him a reason, and
he's heartbroken ... but when he later drops by her place and finds her
half mutated into a tentacled monster that attacks him yet manages to
administer one of her shots just in time, she lets him into her life again
and tells him she's a 2000 year old shapeshifting creature who's reborn as
herself every 20 years, but needs human sperm to do so - and initially she
only needed him as sperm donor, but grew too fond of him - and that's a
threat for her because legend has it that when she falls truly in love she
will not be reborn as herself but remain human until her death (and she
fancied herself immortal) and give birth to a creature like she is. Now
she wants to push Evan away again as she's to be reborn in a mere day, but
he persuades her to go on a roadtrip with him instead ... even if that
could mean his death during her reincarnation process - but it could also
mean she could remain his for a lifetime ... Spring is
based on a weird concept - basically, it's Richard Linklater's Before
Sunrise retold as a creature feature ... and to a point that works
even, as a morbid romance story or a modern fairy tale. Plus the two leads
do their job well and show genuine chemistry, the directorial effort is
atmospheric enough to bring across scenes of romance and threat alike, and
the locations are simply wonderful. The problem with the film though it,
it's about half an hour too long, and thus a tad too talky and too adamant
to hammer its points home, plus the ending is a bit too saccharine. So
basically, not a perfect movie, but one with a lot going for it
nevertheless.
