June (Nicole Cinaglia) has the gift to "see" things - with
the awful effect that during a party she foretells the death of her friend
Kelly (Ashley Sumner) only minutes before it happens ... Chris (David
J.Bonner) and Kellen (Joe Raffa) are vying for the attention of June, who
presently leans over more to Chris's side, while the three of them help
Kellen's uncle Jack (Brian Gallagher) set up his "Haunted
Hotel", basically a tourist attraction that makes good use of its
location, a presumably haunted former asylum. But that's not enough for
Uncle Jack, he also wants actual haunted props and collects them with the
help of June, Chris and Kellen. While for Chris and Kellen, this is just a
crazy idea, June gets increasingly freaked out by the things she sees when
touching the items. At the same time, paranormal investigator Eric (Kyle
Patrick Brennan) is in town, to both give the hotel a bit of publicity via
an investigation and to investigate creepy murderer Jeff Wilde (Alexander
Mandell), who seems to have paranormal powers. When he and June meet, they
immediately bond - much to the dismay of both Chris and Kellen, who get
themselves in such a frenzy that they dig up dead Kelly's body ... only to
find it not in the grave but walking around. They both pay with their
lives for this discovery ... but they'll be back. It's the Haunted
Hotel's opening night, but the problem is that beings from the beyond as
well (as revived Chris and Kellen) have infiltrated the monster
performers, and they are all after June - because you see, the
hotel/former haunted asylum was built on a gate to hell, but it needs six
persons - predetermined by the six degrees of seperation - to open it. And
June (and the child she carries) is the final, the sixth degree, of hell
... Corey Feldman plays a paranormal investigator in the film's framing
story, and pretty much serves as a sort of Greek Chorus. Truth
to be told, the beginning of 6 Degrees of Hell is less than
promising, it seems to be awfully muddled and seems to try to set up way
too much in way too short a time without ever finding its center. Once the
story is properly set up though, the whole thing gets really interesting
and spooky and starts to develop a fascinating mythology all of its own,
which finally comes to a head in the finale, where a rather hokey sideshow
turns into very real horror. Add to this a competent cast and a subtle
enough direction that doesn't shy away from the bizarre though, and you've
got yourself a pretty good movie - provided you can make it through the
first half hour or so.
