Many moons ago, there was a nurse, Esther, who also practiced
witchcraft - which eventually drew the ire of the locals who went and
lynched her ... but not before she could curse the area. Nowadays, all
that's left from this legend is a campfire story that ends in a dare:
Whoever spills blood and says her name right after that will be killed
that same night - which is of course exactly what five young counselors
(Justin Andrew Davis, Ehad Berisha, Peyton Michelle Edwards, Olivia
Helaine, John Pope) do ... and the result is: Nothing - well, at first, as
there needs to be a bit of a calm before the storm ... Now to
be sure, She Came from the Woods is hardly the re-invention of the
wheel - in fact rather the opposite, it's a rather faithful rehash of
horror tropes of the campfire tale variety, deeply rooted in genre
history, first and foremost eighties horror fare, complete with suspense,
jump scares and gory deaths, all right where you'd expect them. But that
said, She Came from the Woods is also really well-made, looks very
slick and knows how to play the genre game very well, resulting in a
rather entertaining little spook show.
