Tsube (Tadanobu Asano) is a down-on-his-luck comicbook artist who can't
even afford the rent to the appartment he lives in with his girlfriend
Kuniko (Miki Fujitani), so eventually he is forced to move in with
sign-painter Kimoto (Kazuhiko Kanayama) while she claims to have found
abode at some dorm where she also works as a cook. But when Tsube
learns that Kojiro, a friend of hers she always had a crush on, also lives
there he starts to get suspicious, only to a few days later find out that
she is pregnant, but neither from him, Tsube, nor from Kojiro but from a
one-night-stand with a customer at the bookschop she used to work.
To forget, Tsube travels to the sea, but during that trip - which
invovles sex, real or imaginary, who can tell, former loves and
prostitutes - he more and more loses grip with reality, until his arm is
slit open by a jellyfish, and his search for a doctor to heal him takes
him right into dreamland.
Everything culminates in a ride on a toytrain through toyland right to
a female gynocologist (!) (Kaoru Mizuki) who treats his wound by
connecting his veins with a valve he can turn on and off ...
The film starts out as (relatively) straight melodrama, but evenmtually
it abandons straight storytelling as such and heads off into surrealism -
but it manages to remain entertaining throughout. A fun film not to be
missed.
