Horror film director Jack (Mike Duffau) has a really shitty day: First
the studio fires him from his latest slasher movie project (basically
because he has shot no more than 12 minutes worth of footage in the last 2
months), and then his wife (Tanya Christiansen), off whose family fortune
he has lived, chucks him out of the house ... but fortunately he meets a
shady producer who promises to handle his film if he manages to finish it
on a tight schedule - which is great of course ... apart from the fact
that the producer offers no money of any kind in advance, and money's
something Jack's rather short on ... But filming some random real life
violence one night gives Jack an idea: Why not make the murders real, and
why not star in his own film as a psychopath? And that's exactly what Jack
does, too. At first he only kills the riff raff, like fathers bullying
their children and the like, but the closer the project comes to its
deadline, the less picky can Jack afford to be - and it doesn't even seem
to matter to him, he starts to enjoy killing people, and he gets quite
creative at it as well. With the deadline being only two days away, Jack
finally decides to go after his wife, who has acted so smug during all of
the divorce proceedings just because her daddy's a lawyer ... Rough
Cut is a film that will almost certainly make you feel uncomfortable -
and not so much because of its storyline and its at times quite graphic
gore scenes but because it often extends its murderscenes to the point
where the audience is really dragged out of their comfort zone, and
because Mike Duffau gives such a creepy but in a weird way also likeable
performance as the film's baddie. And these points are exactly what works
for the movie which would otherwise probably be just a forgettable
slasher, while as it is it's a really unsettling variation on the genre
formula. Creepy!
