Rex Kasper (Ben Guppy) is the hardboiled private eye if there ever was
one, never shying away from a case if it might kill him (as might his
smoking habit), and getting joy out of catshing and punishing the bad
guys. This time it's a corrupt cop, Nelson (Tom Ivancie), he's after,
after Nelson has killed his wife Gayle (Diana Diaz), who even though she
was a golddigger didn't deserve this. Rex' first stop is Nelson's ex
(Rosie De Candia), who he figures is pissed off enough at him to throw a
wrench into his works ... and there, Rex gets a clue that leads him right
to the scene of the crime - but unfortunately he's not the only one there
... Sure, Rex Kasper in The Case of the Killer Detective
is a hard-boiled crime short with an engaging story and quite a bit of
action ... but basically the film's all atmosphere - and in a good way,
too: Taking inspiration from traditional film noir (including
black-and-white images), this movie soon transcends the style, as it's
devoid of on-screen dialogue and is entirely told in voice-overs, it often
uses associative editing to movie the story forward, uses unusual camera
angles and sometimes intentionally confuses the viewer - all to great
effect. A film really worth watching!
