After a UFO has been sighted somewhere in the country, a quartet of
youngsters (Michela Bruni, Luca Guastini, Viola Graziosi, Damiano Martina)
decide to go on a trip to the summer home of one of their parents' to
maybe shoot some cool alien video up there. Sounds like a stupid idea at
first, and probably nothing but an excuse for a bit of partying and
fornicating, but ... heck why not? But things start to get freaky when one
of them, Linda (Viola Graziosi), is abducted from her room, and when the
others find her again, she's 9 months pregnant and about to give birth,
then John (Damiano Martina) is apparently possessed by something. Plus
creatures seem to live in the mirrors, other invisible creatures can only
be caught on cellphone cameras ... and suddenly, Amber (Michela Bruni) and
James (Luca Guastini), the two yet not directly affected by
whatever-it-is, find themselves on the run from something they can't
understand. On their way to the next army base that might or might not be
real, they find refuge in a deserted village where there isn't supposed to
be one, and are suddenly attacked by grotesque creatures. And judging from
the UFOs that they witness attacking their hometown from afar, they figure
the creatures are aliens ... but what to do? In approach, the
found footage-style of Report 51 might be called anything but
original - but other than most movies of its ilk, this one gets it right.
First and foremost it has an actual story arc that actually builds up
tension and suspense rather than substituting it with screaming teens.
Also, while there's lots of shaky handcamera footage, it's handled smooth
enough to not make the audience sick and not disorient the audience. Plus
there is an actual narrative reason for all the found footage (our heroes
just need their camera as their primary abd often only light source). And
finally, the film is populated by believable and well-drawn characters.
Add to this some very atmospheric locations and Michela Bruni as a strong
leading lady, and you've got yourself a very nice movie. Recommended!
