Carlos Atanes is a newer face in film, and one to keep a definite eye
on. Próxima shows this as for an indy film, remains not only
interesting, but with the appearance of a high budget prodction and not
the cost cutting look similar films by others have offered.
In this film, a young man named Tony has an unhealthy fixation with
time travel, space, fanatsy and science fiction. One knows he is in for it
from the start when one of his friends brings him a gift he bought for him
online, supposedly part of the space shuttle. In truth, someone sold him
the wringer of a washing machine. With friends like this, who needs
enemies?
As his video store goes bankrupt, Tony dwells into a fantasy realm of
his own. He encoutners a mysterious female visitor as his store is
closing, who leers at him then disappears.
Next, he attends a sci-fi convention to hear a respected author
announce, more or less, he is abandoning fiction because he has discovered
several secrets to life outside the Earth. In short, science fiction is
about to become science fact. The author is laughed off the stage. Tony,
however, takes what is said seriosuly.
Tony starts to explore the suppsoedly crazed author's theories and
other data, unlocking the key to Próxima, a distant star, from where the
title gets its name.
In searching , he finds out more than he bargained for. We will leave
it at that.
