Hero (Nicolas Cage) has been arrested for the brutal bank heists he has
conducted over his career, but instead of being thrown into the slammer,
he is released into a weird parallel world that mixes motives from the Old
West and samurai movies, where the shady Governor (Bill Moseley) tasks him
with rescuing his granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) - and to make
sure Hero doesn't misstep or make an escape, he's strapped into a latex
suit with bombs attached to it that will blow up in 5 days should Hero not
return with the girl. Apparently, Bernice is held by a neighbouring cult
that attempts to turn her into a mannequin, but encountering this cult
Hero realizes they are no more evil than the Governor himself and just
wait to be rescued - something Hero can actually help with. But once Hero
returns to the Governor with Bernice, he has to realize that the man has
no intention to keep his promise, so he has kill himself through the
Governors men, and especially his top samurai Yasujiro (Tak Sakaguchi).
But even if Hero should succeed, he's still wearing his explosive suit ... Sion
Sone's first US American film might not be the best movie he has ever
made, but he remains true to his motto of over-the-topness in pretty much
everything. As a result, this is a wild mix of western and samurai movie
set in a (probably) post-apocalyptic world where pretty much anything
goes. And while truth to be told the plot itself is a bit confusing and
confused, and Sono doesn't spend all that much time with actual
world-building, the movie drives at a high pace, with something happening
all the time, while Nicolas Cage sure is at his crazy best - which befits
the film perfectly - supported by a very able cast. It's crazy fun for
sure.
