Jack (Charles Davis) seems to have only one reason in his life: To kill
a certain man (Reagan Church) - again and again, traveling from one
dimension of the multiverse to the next just for his next hit. He has no
idea why, he just knows that's what he needs to do and never even
questioned why. That is until he runs into Bearthra (Jennifer Eiffert), a
know-it-all lawyer who rather accidently stumbles into the story, but once
she has been plucked out of her own world, she's looking for answers, and
makes Jack think about his own existence. And eventually, she convinces
Jack to not just go from one portal to the next to repeat his action but
stay in the portal to see what happens. And eventually, they meet Jack's
perpetual victim inside the portal, and he knows frightingly much about
their raison d'etre, including that they were both created by a powerful
being called Mother (Hope Stamper) who has given them their weird
mission - but now that they come close to the truth, Mother starts to
worry, and to keep Jack and his former nemesis from giving up what they're
supposed to do, she kidnaps Bearthra - with rather weird results indeed
... Portal Man is most certaily a film unlike any other:
On the surface, it's of course made up of action mainstays peppered with a
bit of science fiction - but it puts all them together in a wonderfully
absurd way, creating not only a world but a whole logic all of its own
that doesn't necessarily follow the laws of nature - and a clever script
sees to it that the whole thing works nevertheless, helped by a
directorial effort that really gets the tongue-in-cheek nature of the
whole thing. Plus, the (very small) ensemble cast is definitely likeable
or at least relateable enough to draw the audience into the story. Sure,
it might not be a film for everybody, but those who are into the weird and
slightly bizarre will most certainly love it!
