A shipload of girls goes to Lottagrasso, a mining town deep in the
Brazilian jungle to become mail-order-brides for the miners, mainly
criminals on escape from the law. But one of the girls, Mary (Dorothy
Libaire), was actually tricked into going with them because the owner of
the mine, bad gay Von Luden (Alan Hale) wanted an innocent flower for
himself. Streetwise Mame (Dorothy MacKail) however shows great sympathy
with the girls & decides to swap identities (& thus men) with
her so she is supposed to marry Von Luden now while Mary gets good guy
Dave (Regis Toomey), co-owner of the mine. & while Dave initially is
less than interested in Mary, Von Luden soon smells foul play, throws
Mame out &, at a party, tries to rape Mary. When the poor girl is
saved by Dave in the nick of time, this infuriates Von Luden to a point
where he cables the police where to find Dave, who of course has a
criminal record like all the other miners. Meanwhile, Mary & Dave,
who find out each other's secrets, start to fall for each other, &
Mary even convinces Dave to turn himself in - which does rather spoil
Von Luden's plans. His plans are further spoiled when he decides to rape
Mataeo (Mary Kornman of former Our Gang-fame), the village's
doctor's (Harvey Clark) girl & then kills her & throws her into
the swamps. So, when the detectives show up to pick up Dave, so does the
doctor, who finally gives Von Luden his just reward, while Dave is
happily going to repent for his crimes, being sure of the love of Mary,
& even Mama getsw a man of her own, Brownie (Wuill Ahern), whom Dave
leaves his half of the mine.
Nice early talkie-b-picture with a rather sleazy premise (& Alan
Hale gives a good performance as the sex-crazed central villain just to
prove this), filmed in nice (but not overused) jungle sets.
