2011, Cairo, Egypt, only days before the revolution: When a popular
singer is murdered in an upscale hotel, cop Noredin (Fares Fares) soon
finds clues upon clues leading to a blackmailing outfit - when his uncle,
chief of police Kammal (Yasser Ali Maher) tells him to drop the
investigation and rules the apparent murder a suicide. Thing is,
everybody's corrupt in Egypt, including Noredin, so a little bit of money
usually fixes things but nicely. And apparently, a big business big wig
with ties to parliament, Shafiq (Ahmed Selim) is involved in the case, so
... But then, rather surprisingly, it's Shafiq who wants the case
reopened, as he wants to avoid a scandal, and with the help of a maid
(Mari Malek) at said hotel who turns out to be a key witness, Noredin soon
manages to put two and two together - but to what avail? Witnesses are
killed or bribed, Noredin himself is blackmailed after being seduced by
another popular singer (Hania Amar), thus falling into the same trap he
tried to expose, and even the heads of police, including Noredin's uncle,
are not exactly pleased with his findings. And then there's of course the
revolution ... Basically, The Nile Hilton Incident is
just a pretty cool murder mystery in which the emphasis is put not so much
on the whodunnit aspect of the story but the investigation as such, in a
police procedural way ... only to expose the rather, erm, unusual ways of
police procedure in pre-revolutionary Egypt, which of course only adds to
the film's tension. And add to that a fittingly subtle direction that
makes perfect use of its locations in a non-touristy way, and a very solid
cast, and you've got a very cool movie!
