England 1946: Eric Morecambe & Ernie Wise are a comedy duo playing skits at a variety show, &
everything seems just nice & dandy until Morecambe's niece Kathy (Lysette
Anthony) who has just turned 21 comes along, & no sooner is she to
inherit a large fortune, therefore has to go to the reading of the will
in an old dark house in Scotland. Of course, accidents start to happen,
first at the theatre that Eric & Ernie play, then at the train to
Scotland - where the first stiff turns up -, & at the mansion in
Scotland it's even worse, with all the relatives at each other's throats
over the fortune, & even more people dying of unnatural causes. But
who is the skullmask-wearing killer ? Yes, it's (once again) a long lost
member of the family (Kenneth Haigh) seemingly out of nowhere turning up
for the reading of the will, ensuring he gets a large enough share. Of
course, everything turns out well in the end ... or does it ?
Back in the 60's, Morecambe & Wise were the comedy duo of
the British Isles, having their own TV-series (Two of a Kind, The
Morecambe & Wise Show), which mainly consisted of short gags
& funny dialogue. Their television persona however never really
translated into feature-length films even back then (& they tried,
e.g. Intelligence Men, The Riviera Touch), & it did
even less so in the 80's. Furthermore, by then their kind of humour
seemed terribly dated, also way too tame for the time. That fact is also
not at all helped by a terribly uninspired direction, which, though
using all the usual trappings of the Old Dark House-genre -
secret panels, sliding doors, creepy butlers -, shows no understanding
let alone love for the movie's subject whatsoever, leaving the audience
with a boring mystery with stale jokes & bad slapstick.
