Tim O'Hara (Bill Bixby) is a small-scale reporter who misses out on the
story of his life when an army test flight crosses paths with a UFO - but
then he witnesses the UFO crashing into earth, inspects the wreckage, and
saves a very human looking Martian (Ray Walston), whom he takes home to
nurse back to health and who he tells everyone is his uncle Martin. Now
with Martin's information he writes the story of the test flight crossing
paths with the UFO anyhow, which soon lands him in prison as this is
classified information. But fortunately, Martin has telepathic skills and
can make himself invisible, so he makes up a story for Tim how his car
radio picked up the test flight's radio, and even installs a gadget in
Tim's car radio to back up the story, which ultimately sets Tim free again
... Now in all, My Favorite Martian has turned out to be
one of the funnier and more enduring sitcoms of the 1960s, but this very
first episode is not a perfect indicator for that, simply because it uses
its 25 minute running time to set up way too much for future episodes
while also trying to tell a somewhat drawn out story - and really the story
stands in the way of the set-up and vice versa, making this one a bit of a
mess ... with two rather likeable leads at least.
