After years of not caring much about religion as such, Monette (Andrew
Bee), travelling salesman in his mid-50s, storms into a church to demand
to confess to the local priest (Christian Tribuzio), who as a man of God
of course cannot turn him down. Monette's confession is rather long-winded
though and begins with him picking up a deaf-mute hitchhiker (Alexandre
Stoupenkov) one night - actually a nice thing to do. And since he figures
his companion can't hear him anyway, Monette tells him his tale of woe,
how his wife (Laura Shanter) is cheating on him with someone called Cowboy
Bob (Marvin Holland), and how she has pretty much led a parallel life with
that man, based at a nearby motel, on embezzled money. Eventually, the
hitchhiker pretty much disappears into thin air when Monette takes a
toilet break - but it's not long before Monette learns of a brutal murder
at the motel his wife and her lover frequently visit ... A
lovely little horror short that narratively plays like an in the best
possible way old-fashioned short story, complete with macabre details and
a surprise twist at the end that works like a mean punchline. And a
direction that favours atmosphere over over-excitement, and a solid cast
make this into one cool horror short, and one that keeps the cards so
close to its chest that it transcends genre boundaries.
